Summerlee Museum in Coatbridge is working on a project to restore a replica of the Vulcan. The original Vulcan was a horse-drawn barge which carried passengers between Edinburgh and Glasgow. When it launched in 1819 it was the first all iron-hulled boat to be constructed.
Due to its pioneering construction a replica was made in 1986 for the Glasgow Garden Festival. The hull was built and fitted out by British Shipbuilders Training. Clare Weir is keen to hear from you if you were involved in the construction of the vessel at Govan. The information gathered will be part of the new displays to tell visitors the significance of the Vulcan to Scotland’s industrial heritage.
